The 500th birthday of Renaissance composer Cipriano de Rore isn't likely to inspire dancing in the streets, but Piffaro the Renaissance Band has put together an intriguing concert featuring the Laughing Bird vocal quartet in a program of motets and mass movements, some of which sound surprisingly modern. Laughing Bird, made up of some of Philadelphia's more enterprising freelancers, has a repertoire stretching at least from Machaut to Monteverdi. Performances are Friday at Trinity Center for Urban Life, Saturday at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, and Sunday at the Chapel at Christ Church Christiana Hundred in Wilmington. Orli, alone. Though widely known as Gil Shaham's kid sister and chamber music partner, pianist Orli Shaham, a mature artist in her own right, is playing an enterprising solo recital Saturday at Reformed Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park. She'll play Brahms in context with what came before (Schubert) and after (Schoenberg), and explore how he resonates with composers today (Avner Dorman, Bruce Adolphe) - a preview of her new double-disc recording, Brahms Inspired, out in June. "Like works of art grouped in the same room, I find the works on this album speak to and illuminate each other," she writes. Tickets are $25. Though the Philadelphia Singers' Saturday concert at Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square was originally planned as a farewell tribute to its retiring longtime music director, David Hayes, it turned into a farewell to the chorus itself, which is disbanding at the end of the season after 43 years. The program includes key pieces ranging from the Randall Thompson Requiem, which the group recorded, to Bach's "Singet dem Herrn" from Hayes' first concert as music director in 1992.
